Question re: 3 Fold Repetition Rule

Just curious really...

Say a position occurs in a game, which is identical to two previous occurrences; however, not with the same pieces. Does that still count as 3 Fold Repetition?

For example; in the first two occurrences; rook A was on square x, rook B was on square y; however, on the third, rook A is on square y, rook B on square x.

Do the rules stipulate that pieces of the same type are interchangeable for purposes of determining identical positions?
Yes, they are interchangeable

Law 9.2

The game is drawn upon a correct claim by the player having the move, when the same position, for at least the third time (not necessarily by a repetition of moves):
a. is about to appear, if he first writes his move on his scoresheet and declares to the arbiter his intention to make this move, or
b. has just appeared, and the player claiming the draw has the move.

Positions as in (a) and (b) are considered the same, if the same player has the move, pieces of the same kind and colour occupy the same squares, and the possible moves of all the pieces of both players are the same.
nice question......!...... that rule is such a tough one. the status of castling and en passants must be the same ---- i can't even picture what en passant has to do with this exactly... maybe someone else knows. and you're supposed to have a score sheet to prove your claim. um, and you (OP) left out that the identical person on move must be the same. but you were specifying a specific thing and may have just omitted that extra thing... i'm still surprised by the wiki thing on fischer, and i think petrosian. fischer called it on petrosian, and petrosian (according to wiki) said he'd never had that called on him... hopefully i got that correct.....
Sure. Sarg0n’s practical rule of thumb: the FENs have to be the same, they include ep and castling rights.

Simple example:

-starting position (1)
-Knights swap places (2)
-Knights back to starting position thus 3rd time the same position
i was going to try that (#4) in my next game....but quickly realized my opponent would have to do the same... did any of the russkies do this when they wanted a prearranged draw amongst their team members? would've been great!

Lichess apparently doesn't think so.
First board state move 8. Second board state move 14. Third board state move 20.
Ah excellent; thanks everyone, that's quite clear!

I hadn't realised that the potential of the position (castling and en passant) is also accounted for when comparing for 3 occurrences of a position. Though, I don't imagine that element of the rule comes in to play all that often!
#6 position after Black's 8th is not the same as the position after Black's 14th. Both sides still have their castling rights in the first pos
There are really debatable cases, even among experts. Example, is it 3-times repetition (White has castling rights at the beginning, but he will never be able to castle)
