Master The Fork: A Tactical Guide
An essential tactical guide that you MUST have! What is a Fork? - A Knight Fork Example
A fork is a tactic defined when one piece attacks two enemy pieces at the same time. This is an example of a Classic Knight Fork:
In this particular position, the Knight gives a Check to the King, and attacks the Queen at the same time. Black is forced to defend the King, resulting in the loss of their Queen.
A Simple Pawn Fork

White to move
This is an example of a Simple Pawn Fork. As you can see, the Bishop and Knight are placed on e5 & g5, respectively. In this position, White can play f4, attacking the Bishop and Knight.
No matter what Black does, they cannot defend both minor pieces. If Black defends the Knight, the Bishop remains hanging, and if Black decides to defend the Bishop, they lose the Knight.
A Simple Rook Fork

White to move - Again!
This is an example of a Simple Rook Fork. In the above example, Black's Bishop and King are on the same rank, therefore, we can play Rd6 to attack both the Bishop and the King at the same time. Black will have to defend their King and we will win the Bishop.
A Simple Bishop Fork

White to move
In the above position, Black's Rook and King are placed on the same diagonal. The Bishop can simply jump to c5 and give a check to the King while simultaneously attack the Rook. In the end, White will be a Bishop and a Pawn up, with great chances of winning. (If played properly)
