not in Canada, but in China it is a big holiday. A "golden week" holiday, everyone gets a week off work. Well, almost everyone. But the thing is, to get the week off, workers have to go in to work on the weekend before and/or after to make up hours lost. which has led more than one person to ask why we don't just get a few days and keep to a more regular routine. Ehh. For a foreigner like myself, the shifted working hours was a minor inconvenience, but for the family it was great to have a longer holiday. For many rural Chinese, separated from their families while working or studying in a distant city, it means an opportunity to get home.
In Canada, Labour Day is the first Monday in September. For many years, especially in the 1920s and 30s, May 1st was a day of protest more than of celebration. And it was violently suppressed by the RCMP, Quebec Provincial Police and various local police forces. People today forget that living wages and working hours are not a natural phenomenon; they were won by men and women who were were willing to stand up to the police and the company thugs.
In France, it is a holiday. But here in South Korea, we don't have a holiday for May 1st or Labour Day.
Here in Romania, the 1st of May is a holiday and we don't work.
