Now, I just watched Trump and Zelensky giving a press conference in The White House https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gMISdAAOZE
I didn ́t watch all of it, for reasons I will soon mention. So what follows is my impressions and thoughts about not only the press conference itself, but broadly about phenomenon Trump.
But before I continue, let me insert a
disclaimer
The following text is only my impressions and thoughts about Trump. I do not claim to know him any more than you do, but since I ́m a person living in this tumultuous world, I feel it is my personal responsibility to try make sense of it, if only for my own well-being. That being said, I sincerely hope that perhaps someone else would also benefit from it. That ́s why I write this, and who knows, perhaps it opens a door to fruitful and beneficial discussion, even though my exceptation is quite low in regard, given what usually happens to this type of forum posts.
That being said, let ́s continue
So, I when I began to watch the press conference, it was at a moment Trump was responding to a question about (I assume) mail-voting. He said it was a bad idea, and that he would scrap it. Now, I don ́t know about American politics (I ́m still finnish, wink wink), and I don ́t know whether he is right about it, he may or may not be. Personally I don ́t even care. That wasn ́t what caught my attention, and now we come to the reasons I couldn't keep on watching the press conference much longer.
Anyway, so Trump answered to the question by attacking democrats, saying that they are this or that they are that and so forth (Again, they may well be, I don ́t know, much less care). But he kept ranting (yes, I call his ramblings that) about that and repeated I don ́t know many times "mail-in voting is bad, mail-in voting is bad". Ok, old man, we get it, can we move on. No he couldn ́t, he kept on and on so eventually (and more or less involuntarily) I began thinking, "what is wrong with this man, does he think we are stupid or what?".
So there was the moment where it all fell in to place, at least for me.
You see, I know many will say that he ́s only trying to convince us about the thing(s) which he keeps repeating. But no, the bold truth is that he is trying to convince not only us, but first and foremost himself. You see, Trump isn ́t a man (if you genuinely look at his life) who is known to have strong principles. He has strong opinions, that ́s for sure (not that they couldn ́t change in a sec, if needed). But strong opinions (and boasting about them) isn ́t the same as having strong, moral convictions. No, quite the opposite. Like I said, opinions can change, but moral convictions can ́t, that's the very nature of them. If they could, then they weren't convinced in the first place.
But now that Trump has delved (at the end of is life) into politics, he trying to be as good rebublican as there ever has been. And I don ́t blame him, that is - from my simple understanding - the nature of American politics. Apart from verbal shit-throwing, of course. Frankly, not my cup of tea, but then again, i ́m not a resident of the world's "civilized" country. Thank God for that.
And again, i don ́t say that what Trump does or doesn't is right or wrong. But at least he ́s trying. Something. God knows what, and in His mercy i trust. But what I can say I agree with Trump supporters, is that he has the potential. He has a strong, stubborn character, which can be very useful if, and only if it is guided by strong personal and moral convictions.
Sadly, i don ́t think that is the case with Trump.
Again, i could be totally wrong. Actually i would love to be wrong, but nothing what has come (that I know of) out of his presidency so far hasn ́t really shattered my view on him and the phenomenon surrounding him, both supporters and opposers. Take for instance the conflict in Ukraine (my thoughts about it is known to those who know).
It is a complicated matter, that ́s for sure, and solving it is hard, if not impossible, at least for the moment. I do believe, however, that Trump sincerely wants the war to end. And I think he's trying to solve it. But - and here comes the issue with convictions - he hasn ́t (or rather nobody of his to-go people hasn ́t) been able to convince him that either side is right or wrong. So we can all see how he stands there, swaying from left to right (like in politics before his years as a presidential candidate). It largely depends on who he spoke to last, as someone has - perhaps exaggeratedly - said. But we can all see it, and i don ́t think it will change any time soon.
So, i don't think he will end the conflict in Ukraine any time soon, much less in the 24 hours he boasted about. And that ́s all due to the lack of any personal, moral convictions on his part.
Once again, i would love to be wrong in this matter, but sadly i don ́t think i am.
Anyhow, this was my fifty cents on the phenomenon surrounding Trump.
Thanks for reading, and have a good day/night!
