Share your chess goals for '25

In 2025, my chess goals are to increase my rating by at least 200 points, study one new opening and key endgames, play weekly slow games with analysis, solve five puzzles a day to sharpen tactics, and participate in at least three over-the-board tournaments.

Now that I have returned to Canada, and I am able to play live OTB chess, my goal is to get to a chess club on a semi-regular basis and play. I would like to play a few CFC tournaments, but I have no specific rating goals other than to see how well I can adjust. (Would be nice to get back over 2000 though)

Solving puzzles for 30 minutes everyday. One serious classical game every week and analysing it.

  • do something with the growing backlog of books to read
  • reduce the number of stupid blunders
  • further improve my time management
  • widen my opening repertoire a bit

As far as explicit numbers go:

  • national rating of 1500 (I believe 1600 should be reachable but probably not before October 1st)
  • FIDE rating of 1750
  • lichess rating of 1850 (tempted to say 1900 but rather not, given my recent performance)

Oh, yes. I thought I had this under control, because when I moved back to Canada, I only brought 3 chess books on the plane, and I had already read most of one of them and a significant fraction of the other two. But yesterday a large box arrived from China, and in that package were another 10 or so books waiting to be finished. Including my favourite bathroom book, Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy. Just when I thought I was getting out...

<snip other universal complaints>

As far as explicit numbers go:<snip>

Ratings are just numbers. Numbers add up to nothing. Work on the real issues and the numbers will follow.

Most of my chess library fits into a convenient package sized approximately 17 x 12 x 1.2 cm. :-)

Sure, that's why I put the other goals first (although I didn't go into details about the planned study topics). After all, the most important feedback is how I feel about my play. But I noticed that as I improve, I also become more critical toward my play so that my perception of it is still about the same. (I often say that improving your chess does not mean that you make fewer mistakes but rather that your mistakes become more subtle - but at the same time you adjust your scale what you consider a mistake or a blunder.) Which is where some measurable feedback comes handy and ratings serve that purpose quite well as long as you don't take them too religiously.
