In the actual game, just relax and enjoy the process, and for me it is much easier to play well when doing that. Also I like taking time walking around away from the board during the game to clear my head and refresh my mind. Good luck!
Don't eat a double cheeseburger combo in between rounds. Best to eat a good early breakfast, then eat lightly throughout the day to keep you going. Digesting a big meal is not conducive to good chess.
@mrsdgm "Sit on your hands" Learn from the exoerience ... My first Rating was 1255 Provisional but I had read a few Chess Books not many but still . So I say PLAY Play well learn well Study Chess then practice & Study more & smile good luck Play over your games away from the tournament gall & still remember to sleep & eat !
Yes, sit on your hands! Know what you want to do before you remove them from down under,
Smile. Remember your opponent is just like you. Make some friends with a common passion. You will always have something to talk about. These things will last a lifetime.
Be extra careful when you make a move. Board vision being limited in OTB compared to online is a real thing for players like us who mostly play online. Leads to missed tactics and motifs all the time.
the day of the tournament is not the best time to seek advice. It takes time for advice to sink in, for you to consider it, to adapt the advice to your own situation and needs. As odd as it sounds, the best time might be after your tournament has ended, so you can start with questions such as "What went wrong?" and "What went right?"
Jan Timman had something interesting to say (I think it was The art of Chess Analysis, bicbw) about learning from Botvinnik's advice. Basically he found after he had taken B's specific advice in preparing for a tournament that it didn't work for him. But re-reading Botvinnik, he found some other advice he had ignored: don't change your regular routine.
The day of the tournament? get there early, rested, and ready to have fun.
@mrsdgm So how did it go?
