Is it better to play chess against a computer or a human?

I’m sticking to computer games for now to get the basics down, and I’ll switch to playing real people once I’m a bit stronger. It’s not that I’m scared of losing — it’s just nice being able to pause, take back moves, and think without pressure.
The thing is, I often have no clue what the computer is trying to do — all I see is my win rate going down.

Well if you're practising then computer fine , but human play is always more fun, especially when they hang a queen ha ha ha xxx don't get hooked on playing fish you have to stand up and play human chess at some point , no matter how fast your heart races or adrenaline pumps , that's the game and fun,or risk lol happy chessing xxx

Depends upon your Intention!

  1. If you want to just play chess, and enjoy it's beauty, play humans! Even if you are a serious chess player (like me), there is absolutely no cons in playing with humans. You will find a few brilliancies too! But it has a downside. You will lose rating upon loss/draw. It should not matter us, but as a human, nobody likes losing, right? :)

  2. If you want to practice your openings, bots are best, specially to practice critical variations. If you want to train endgames, just load it on the bot! It will give you the most irritating and stubborn defense even in lost endgames. This ALSO has a downside :) .
    a) Playing from starting position, Stockfish will beat you ∞ out of ∞ times :) . Not just you, even me, Magnus, and even Other
engines(!). After some time bots feel boring to play!
    b) Because you gain no rating even if you win! :)
    c) Engine moves are very artificial. Nobody can understand them!
    d) They don't understand psychology. That means, If you sacrifice your h-pawn and launch a deadly attack, it would still defend
with chill where most humans would freak out.

Coming to the point, my humble advice is that you should play humans for now. Besides, it is your choice to select your opponent. Maybe you just love engines? It's your choice after all :)

My motto is . . . play against humans, train against the computer.

The problem with mainly using engines for training games is that at least a classical engine won't take any risks at all, a human player often will. There is also no psychological considerations made by the engine as it usually does not know anything about the opponent
