What openings are good over the board against e4?

I have decided to overhaul my repertoire from the basic Philidor/Old Indian formation in favor of more reliable openings (I was crushed in a recent tournament when I tried to play them). I decided on the King's Indian against d4 and flank openings, as well as the Reti as white.
however, I cannot decide on an opening against e4. the Sicilian is too theory-heavy (and there are far too many sidelines for my tastes), the modern defense is just bad in my opinion, e4 e5 forces you to learn a lot of different structures, and I never liked the classical variation of the Caro Kann from black's perspective (looks too scary!)

The ''big 4'' are e5, c5, c6, e6. Lots more are playable: d6, g6, Nf6. It all depends on what you want. Whatever you play against e4, some days you'll win easily and some days you get beat like a rented mule.

Generally, it's not the opening's fault. When you lose like that- analyze your game then set up the position where you first went wrong on lichess and play vs the computer at your level +1 until you start not losing until late in the game.

The Czech is a splendid choice but very close to Philidor and Pirc. The soul is black.
