Season 11 - First Level - Group A

It’s crunch time as we head into the final month of the 11th Correspondence League – with titles, promotions and relegations all set to be decided.

The final three rounds will all be played simultaneously from Saturday, and the beauty of the format means no promotions have yet been confirmed and the only relegations are down to withdrawals.

Here is how things stand in your group ahead of rounds seven, eight and nine. A reminder – if two players finish on the same score, the following tiebreaks will apply in this order:

#1: Points vs. tied participants
#2: Match wins
#3: Sonnerborn-Berger score against group (not calculated in these league tables).

I’ve tried to include the various tiebreaks in the tables.

Group A (tier 1)
1. Hell-Der P6 Pts 11 (more wins than DJJuergen)
2. DJJuergen P6 Pts 11
3. Chess Dictatorship P5 Pts 8
4. NM Aries65 P5 Pts 7
5. minosaurus P5 Pts 6
6. Alexander122333 P5 Pts 5
--------------------------------------
7. PoetsMoon P6 Pts 5
8. Willem-II P5 Pts 3
9. Kulakovma P5 Pts 2
10. weBNimzQ P9 Pts 0 (R) (withdrawn)

A real surprise could be on the cards with the potential for a new Correspondence League champion being crowned.

In the absence of defending champion CurtvonBardleben, the untimely departure of previous league organiser WeBNimzQ (who finished third last season) and prior withdrawal of newly-promoted BatKnight (who had been expected to mount a serious challenge), the path seemed clear for multiple winner ChessDictatorship to resume their dominance of the league.

But that hasn't happened. Instead, Hell-Der and DJJuergen have emerged from midtable to be the suprise frontrunners heading into the final month of the season. The pair are three points clear of ChessDictatorship and separated only by Hell-Der picking up more wins so far. For DJJuergen, it is quite a reversal of fortunes after receiving a late reprieve from relegation last season due to player withdrawals.

But there are some huge games to come - DJJuergen v Hell-Der in round nine, DJJuergen v ChessDictatorship in round seven and Hell-Der v fourth placed NM Aries65 in round eight. Nothing is decided yet!

The scramble is already under way to avoid the four relegation spots at the foot of the table. Both Kulakovma and Willem-II face an uphill task and will need to win at least two of their remaining three games. The newly-promoted trio minosaurus, Alexander122333 and PoetsMoon have all been competitive but all remain in the thick of the survival struggle. PoetsMoon currently lies seventh and in the final relegation spot, but is only two points adrift of NM Aries so there is plenty left to play for.

Big games to come at the bottom include PoetsMoon v Willem-II, Alexander122333 v Kulakovma, Willem-II v Alexander122333, Kulakovma v minosaurus and Kulakovma v Willem-II.

Best of luck to all competitors in your final three games!
