Currently, it seems that all variations are treated equally even if the move is marked as bad (?!, ?, or ??). This is confusing and annoying because if you play a bad move, you have to restart the lesson to get back to the mainline. I think that when you play a bad move, it should indicate that it's bad but still let you play it out to see why, rather than saying "Good move!" Also, regardless of whether the variation was marked as bad or not, there should be an option to return to the mainline where you left off rather than restarting the entire study. Also perhaps it would be nice to have an option to return to the relative mainline (i.e., if you're in a variation of a variation, return to the original variation) instead of the absolute mainline as well.
I'm not sure how hard this would be to implement technically, but I think at least it shouldn't say "Good move!" for bad moves and it should count as a bad move in the score percentage.
Thanks in advance!

@AsDaGo there is a setting called "Avoid lines marked as bad" which is enabled by default, but it only affects the variations that you need to complete in Sequential or Spaced Repetition modes. If you don't use Seq/Spa it lets you play whatever you want. However, in Seq/Spa you only have one correct variation, which is one that does not contain bad glyphs for your side, and anything else is bad.
You can disable "Avoid lines marked as bad" and see if you like that option more, but in Seq/Spa that will force you to finish even the lines that you should NOT take.

Thanks, I didn't know about those settings. Is there a reason that the "Avoid lines marked as bad" setting doesn't apply if sequential and spaced repetition are disabled? I don't see why it shouldn't and it also seems like a reasonable default (following the principle of least surprise in my opinion).

Well, the reason you provided yourself. Maybe you want to explore the bad variations, but you don't want to be FORCED to explore them when sequential and/or spaced repetition are enabled.

Yes, but then you could just turn off avoid lines marked as bad when you're not using sequential/spaced repetition, and turn it back on when you are. I just wish there was a way to have it accept any good move but no bad moves, and the default behavior is confusing because it says "Good move!" when it's actually a bad move.

This is all explained in the manual. Good move means a move in the PGN. It's good in the sense of the extended interactive lesson. You can have it be "good" and marked as a blunder.

I see, but I feel like it would still be nice to have an option to not consider moves marked as a blunder/mistake/inaccuracy as a good move even if not in sequential/spaced repetition mode. Also even when they are considered as "good" moves, I don't think it should say "Good move" in green since that is confusing. Instead, maybe it should say "Bad move" in red (or "Next" in red if there's a message) but still let you play it out.

BTW, @AsDaGo , if you enable Fast Interaction you won't even see the "Good move" popup, just a red X or a green Checkmark on the interactive box on the right.

Anyway, @AsDaGo , I implemented your request in V2.4.59
