Preview: FIDE World Chess Championship 2023

Honestly I feel sorry for all the Russian, Belarusian, and Ukranian athletes and chess players. Most of them didn't ask for all this complication and stress.
It is a shame that in either case the victory will be used as propaganda by an authoritarian government and only serve to benefit the continued oppression of hundreds of millions of people. Whereas Norway is a decent country and a Carlsen victory is easy to root for.

I suppose I'll be rooting for Deng to win with a margin of victory similar to Carlsen's, because the Russian people deserve every humiliation and disgrace the world can provide right now. Nothing against Nepo personally, who seems like a fine person and can not realistically be expected to sacrifice his entire life and career in protest of his evil government.
We can expect a captivating battle between two contrasting styles. Nepo's fearless attacking play and rapid calculations will clash with Ding's solid strategic approach and remarkable endgame mastery. Both players have notable achievements under their belts: Nepo has won multiple Russian Championships while Ding remains the first Chinese player to ever break into the top 10 and has an astounding 100-game unbeaten streak from 2017 to 2018 period.
This World Chess Championship is completely uninteresting to me. I don't care if that slightly chubby Russian or that skinny Chinese wins.

No matter who, the "new World Champion" will always have the blemish of being second to Carlsen.
Lichess, quit mixing politics and sports.
I’m against the invasion, but banning sport based on politics is just wrong because there is no objectivity to it. Why was the USA not banned when it invaded Cuba, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria? I’m not judging on wether these invasions were justified. I’m saying that you can never objectify politics.

Uh oh, you made an oopsy and went against the NATO agenda. That's a downvote for you, buddy boy.

I might be mistaken, but wasn't Wang Yue the first chinese player to reach FIDE top 10?
Actually Alekhine could still choose his challenger himself and never chose one of the dangerous ones such as Capablanca (from whom he snatched it) or Nimzovich, so in a way he never defeated his title.
